On today’s Big Story Podcast, between Meta (formerly Facebook) losing $80 billion and Elon Musk’s fumbling start to his Twitter acquisition, it’s been an interesting week on social media to say the least. And the size and influence of these companies, means that we could see the fallout reverberate well beyond their user bases.
Jesse Hirsh is a technologist and a futurist. He joined us to share his impressions of Musk’s first days at the helm of Twitter, and Zuckerberg’s seemingly religious devotion to the Metaverse.
“[Musk] is not only the richest person in the world, but he certainly has a desire to play politics, to influence global events, and now he’s got one of the largest soap-boxes in the world to do so,” he said.
What might these shake-ups mean for the future of online discourse? How about the future of social media in general? And what consequences could that have in the so-called ‘real world’?
