Mayor Scott Gillingham has appointed five members of the Executive Policy Committee.
- Coun. Jeff Browaty: chair of the standing policy committee on finance and economic development
- Coun. Janice Lukes: chair on public works
- Coun. Brian Mayes: chair on water, waste and environment
- Coun. John Orlikow: chair on community services
- Coun. Sherri Rollins: chair on property and development
The mayor also announced Lukes will serve as deputy mayor, and Coun. Markus Chambers will serve as acting deputy mayor and chair of the police board.
Gillingham officially inaugurated
The announcement came one day after Gillingham was officially sworn in as Winnipeg’s 44th mayor.
The mayor, along with 15 other members of council, undertook their declaration of office during an inauguration ceremony.
“My simple ask from everyone in this council chamber tonight and to everyone across the city is the same: to let us unite,” said Gillingham.
During the municipal election, there were 10 other candidates running for the city’s top job including former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray.
“Glenn Murray came very close to defeating me in a tight race and I want to pay respect to him and his supporters by quoting him on a point we completely agree with. As Glenn put it, ‘there’s only one team in Winnipeg, ’and he’s right.”
Gillingham won with 27.5 per cent of the vote after serving two terms as city councillor. His campaign platform included raising taxes by 3.5 per cent, repairing the roads and tackling the city’s rising crime.
“My campaign has been filled up with the theme of building a stronger Winnipeg and I am a collaborator and I will continue to collaborate with all councillors,” he said.
Gillingham says his priority as mayor is to bring council together and create what he calls a “strategic plan” for the city.
“I talked about being important and we want to build that with every councillor at the table and that will give us priorities for the next four years that we can pursue together.”
