Toronto man received nearly $500K from victims in alleged romance scam

A Toronto man is under arrest after he received almost $500,000 from victims in an alleged series of romance scams.

Police say the scams occurred between February 2020 and June 2021, when the suspect met his victims on dating apps.

The suspect would begin a romantic relationship with the victims and presented himself as an “investment specialist.”

After gaining their trust he would offer the victims high return investment opportunities. He would make the same investment pitch to members of the victim’s families.

Investigators say he received approximately $460,000 in total as a result of the scams. Police believe there could be more victims.

Police have arrested 36-year-old Jasal Thiara from Toronto and charged him with five counts of fraud over $5,000.

He is scheduled to appear in a Toronto courtroom on Nov. 29.
