The grain needs a train: Billions of dollars at stake on the prairies

By The Big Story

In today’s Big Story podcast, international buyers are scooping up Canadian grain by the boatload, and providing a huge boost to prairie economies in the process. This year, a bumper crop could be even better than in 2021 — that is, if we can get it all to market.

Lindsay Campbell is a reporter at iPolitics.ca. She recently wrote about Canadian farmers, and the train delays threatening the viability of their harvest.

“Last week’s report, it found that CP was only providing sixty per cent of what it had initially committed to in terms of rail cars,” she said, “it was the third consecutive week that CP was not meeting its commitments.”

The stakes are high for the farmers whose livelihoods depends on their ability to bring their grains to port. So how did this happen, who is at fault, and how do we fix it, fast?
