Winnipeg man charged in alleged assault of elementary school student

A 31-year-old man has been charged by Winnipeg police in connection to an alleged sexual assault on Winnipeg Transit, and a physical assault on a child.

WPS say the first incident happened in September. Winnipeg Transit reported to police that a woman informed a driver that she had been groped by another passenger.

Around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, police were called to the Transcona neighbourhood on reports of an elementary school student being assaulted.

Reports say the child was punched by a man while they were walking in front of the school. Staff members at the school intervened and called police.

The student was looked at by paramedics and was treated for a minor injury.

Not long after the incident police were able to locate the man believed to be involved, and he was taken into custody.

WPS noted the school’s resource officer recognized the man as the suspect in the previous bus sexual assault, which was echoed by the WPS Sex Crimes Unit investigators.

The 31-year-old was charged with sexual assault and assault.
