Winnipeg police say a teenage babysitter was accidentally shot while taking a gun away from a toddler at an apartment complex in Seven Oaks on Saturday morning.

Police determined the teenager was babysitting a toddler while an adult was asleep in the apartment.

The toddler allegedly found an “insecure-loaded gun” and was running around with it. Police say when the babysitter grabbed the gun from the child, it accidentally discharged and struck her.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it was called to the Seven Oaks apartment complex around 11 a.m.

Officers found the teenage babysitter with a gunshot wound in her upper body. She was taken to hospital in stable condition.

A 20-year-old Winnipeg woman was arrested on scene. She is facing multiple charges, including possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm.

She was released on an undertaking.
