Canada defeats rival USA to win Women’s World Hockey Championship

Brianne Jenner scored twice to lead Canada to a 2-1 win over their bitter rivals from the United States and claim gold at the Women’s World Hockey Championship on Sunday.

Goaltender Ann-Renee Desbiens made 20 saves for the win – her biggest coming against forward Kendall Coyne Schofield in the final minute of play as the American’s were pressing for the equalizer.

It’s the 12th gold medal Canada has won at this tournament and the first time in 18 years they have won back-to-back titles.

It’s the second time in six months that Canada has defeated the U.S. at a major international hockey tournament, having won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics back in February.

Canada ended the U.S. streak of five straight world titles with a 3-2 overtime win in Calgary last year.

Canada and the U.S. have met in the final of all but one world championship since the inaugural tournament in Ottawa in 1990.

The 2023 women’s championship will be held in Canada in a city yet to be announced, followed by the U.S. hosting it in 2024.
