Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev dead at 91, Russian media says

Former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev has died at 91, according to Russian news agencies.

Gorbachev was considered one of the key figures in the ending of the Cold War and fall of the Soviet Union.

Multiple Russian news agencies are reporting the former Soviet president passed away in the hospital after receiving treatment.

Gorbachev was the last Soviet Union president.

He forged arms reduction deals with the U.S. and partnerships with Western powers to remove the Iron Curtain and bring about the reunification of Germany.

Although his reforms at home led to social and political turbulence, many Russians never forgave him for the subsequent plunge in their living standards.
