Streaming platforms fight for their futures

By The Big Story Podcast

In today’s Big Story podcast, Last week HBO debuted their new Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon.

In a few days, Amazon will follow suit with its Lord of the Rings prequel, Rings of Power. These shows cost millions of dollars per episode, and are a big part of HBO and Amazon’s strategies to attract and retain viewers in an increasingly saturated streaming market.

Brian Steinberg is a senior TV Editor at Variety. He joins The Big Story to break down the economics of streaming and outline the competitive advantages of each of the industry’s biggest players.

“Disney is coming on very strong, Amazon is coming on very strong, Apple is buying up sports rights, as is Amazon,” he said. “It’s kind of the survival of the fittest right now.”

This year has seen layoffs, declining subscriber numbers for Netflix, a coming merger between HBOMax and Discovery+, and several other indicators of an industry in flux. When the dust settles, who will be the one, or ones, on top?
