Drone used to smuggle meth, fentanyl into Stony Mountain Institution: RCMP

Two men from B.C. are facing an assortment of charges after an alleged attempt to get drugs into a Manitoba federal prison by drone.

Manitoba RCMP say on July 3 they received information that a drone was flying above and into Stony Mountain Institution, with a suspicious vehicle nearby.

Members of Stonewall RCMP say they were able to find and stop the vehicle near Highway 7 and Provincial Road 321.

When they approached the vehicle, officers say they noticed a drone on the backseat, at which time two men were arrested.

A search was conducted inside Stony Mountain and RCMP say a package containing meth and what’s believed to be fentanyl was found inside the institution.

Employees reported they had seen a drone and found a similar package the day before.
RCMP also say a resident in the area found a similar package and reported it to police a day after the arrest.

On July 6, Winnipeg police were called to an Airbnb on Stradbrook Avenue after the owner says they found a gun and a large quantity of meth and other drugs allegedly left behind by the two suspects.

The men now face an assortment of charges, including weapons and drug-trafficking offences. Police say more charges are pending.

The accused are a 20-year-old man from Vancouver, and a 22-year-old man from Burnaby, B.C.
