Suspect facing attempted murder of police officer charges after Portage la Prairie break-in

Manitoba’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), is investigating following an officer-involved shooting Wednesday morning near Portage la Prairie.

RCMP reportedly responded to a break-in of a business around 3:50 a.m.

RCMP say while the suspect attempted to flee the scene along Highway 1, they rammed a police vehicle several times and attempted to force officers off the road.

In a statement, police say the suspect’s actions “resulted in the police vehicle being pinned between the suspect vehicle and the trailer it was towing. The officer was able to exit the vehicle. The suspect vehicle swerved toward the officer and then fled.

“During the incident, shots were fired by the officer involved. The officer received minor physical injuries.”

A 27-year-old man from Winnipeg was arrested following the incident and is facing multiple charges, including the attempted murder of a police officer.

The suspect was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The IIU was called in due to an officer using a firearm that caused harm.
