After traffic stop, man fought officer on highway in southern Manitoba: RCMP

A Manitoba RCMP officer suffered minor injuries after a traffic stop allegedly escalated into a fight in southern Manitoba Thursday.

RCMP say the incident took place around 2 p.m. in Niverville, Man., about 40 kilometres south of Winnipeg.

In a release issued Tuesday, police say the officer stopped a driver on 6th Avenue south. The reason for the traffic stop was not revealed.

The driver, a 51-year-old man from Niverville, allegedly “became aggressive and threatened the officer,” according to the release.

When the man was told he was under arrest, he “actively resisted and began fighting the officer.”

Police say that fight led both the officer and the suspect onto the highway, where a passerby stopped to assist the officer in subduing the driver.

The man was charged with assault on a police officer, uttering threats and resisting arrest.
