IIU investigating after knife-wielding woman injured by police using ‘less-lethal’ firearm

The police watchdog has begun an investigation after Winnipeg Police caused minor injuries while trying to apprehend a woman.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says they were notified by the WPS of an incident that occurred after an officer discharged a “less lethal” firearm.

WPS said they were responding to a complaint of a woman with a knife on a bus. The women reportedly fled the bus before being located at 870 Main Street.

“Attempts were made to have the female comply with their requests to drop the weapon but she refused to comply,” said the IIU in a statement. “WPS officers deployed pepper spray, a less-lethal firearm and conducted energy weapon (taser) to subdue and arrest her.”

The woman was then transported to the Health Sciences Centre where she was treated for minor injuries.
