A girl walking to school was assaulted by an adult man in Winnipeg on Monday morning, police say.
Winnipeg police say the assault occurred between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. in the Fort Richmond neighbourhood.
The “middle-school-age” girl – in the range of Grade 6 to Grade 8 – was walking to school on Greencrest Avenue towards Ulster Street when a man approached her from behind and pulled her to the ground.
The man, who is believed to be in his 20s or 30s, then began dragging the girl. Police say the victim managed to kick herself free. The suspect then fled on foot.
“These kind of events are very concerning,” a WPS spokesperson said at a press conference Wednesday. “It’s disturbing, it’s scary.”
The young girl made it home safety, at which point police were contacted. She did not require medical attention.
The school division sent out a warning advising the community of the incident.
The suspect was about 5-foot-10 to six feet tall with an average build. The girl described her attacker as “dirty.” He was wearing a COVID mask.
No composite sketch of the suspect was provided. Police have no witnesses yet.
Police say they had to details regarding the suspect’s motivation.
Because the assault took place in a residential area, police hope witnesses will come forward, or that the attack was caught on someone’s doorbell camera.
The Child Investigations Unit is investigating.
