Isabelle Weidemann skates to silver for Canada at Beijing Olympics

Canadian long-track speedskater Isabelle Weidemann won a silver medal in the women’s 5,000 metres on Thursday at the Beijing Olympics.

It was the Ottawa native’s second medal of the Games after she won bronze in the 3,000 metres.

Irene Schouten of the Netherlands overtook Weidemann for gold in the final pairing with an Olympic record of six minutes 43.51 seconds. Schouten also won the 3,000 metres.

Weidemann finished in 6:48.18. Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic took bronze in 6:50.09.

Canada now has 12 medals at the Games — one gold, four silver and seven bronze.

Weidemann’s medal was the fourth on Day 6 for Canada.
