A 26-year-old woman whose death in Winnipeg last week is being investigated as a homicide is being remembered by a close friend as someone they could always count on through hard times.

Heather Beardy was found dead in the 400 block of Furby Street on Feb. 2. Her death sent shockwaves through her network of friends and family.

“She was the person I could come to when I was sad, angry, or wanting to hurt myself,” said Tiffany Crowe, one of Beardy’s closest friends. “She would tell me not to, she would tell me, ‘just stay in this world.’

“She was a great friend to me.”

Crowe says Beardy’s death came as a shock.

“I was so mad,” she said. “We only know so little right now and I’m hurting inside.”

Crowe says while they haven’t seen each other since the beginning of the pandemic, Beardy was one of her closest friends, with their friendship dating back to their teenaged years.

She says she wants justice for Beardy and her family, and wants to see those responsible caught.

“I want them locked up.”

A memorial where people can offer their condolences to the young woman, has been set up inside of the apartment block where she lived.

Messages like “you will be forever missed” were written across a piece of wood blocking the doorway.

For members of the Beardy family, this is the second tragedy they’ve been faced with in recent years.

Heather’s father Dervin Beardy went missing in 2016. RCMP in Selkirk say the investigation into his disappearance is ongoing.

Stephanie Beardy, Heather’s mom, is grieving the loss of her child, and says the family is looking for answers.

“I just want to know what happened,” she said. “What happened and why they had to take her away from me so soon.”

CityNews reached out to police for updates on Heather Beardy’s death – the fifth homicide in Winnipeg so far this year.

Police said there were no updates to provide at this time. They are asking anyone with information on the death to contact the service’s homicide unit or Crime Stoppers.
