Britney Spears is being asked to hand over $650,000 to her mom, who she blames for the conservatorship that has constrained her life for 13 years.
The pop singer strongly criticized her mother in an Instagram post on Tuesday – writing in part, that she “secretly ruined my life.” The post has since been deleted.
The conservatorship battle has mostly involved her dad, Jamie, but Britney said in the social media post that her mom gave him the idea.
“What people don’t know is that my mom is the one who gave him the idea,” she said. “I will never get those years back… she secretly ruined my life.”
She continued: “You know exactly what you did. My dad is not smart enough to ever think of a conservatorship, but tonight I will smile knowing I have a new life ahead of me.”
In response, Britney’s mom, Lynne, is asking her daughter for over $650,000 in attorney-related fees. In a petition for payments, Lynne’s lawyers requested that her attorneys be paid by Britney’s estate for their involvement in her conservatorship case. The conservatorship is in the process of being terminated.
Britney has been under conservatorship since 2008 when concerns were raised over her mental health. This prompted her father to petition a court for legal authority over his daughter’s life. Before his suspension, her father had the lion’s share of day-to-day power over his daughter’s choices for 13 years.
In 2019, he gave up the role of a conservator over her life decisions, maintaining control only over her finances. He has now been replaced by John Zabel, an accountant chosen by Britney Spears and her attorney.
Spears said at a June hearing that she had been denied the right to get married, but she has since gotten engaged to longtime boyfriend Sam Asghari. The conservatorship will make a prenuptial agreement a necessity if she is still under it when she marries.
