WINNIPEG (CityNews) – A family is mourning the death of a three-year-old girl after a stabbing in Winnipeg.

Police say they responded to a call that the toddler was allegedly abducted from her mother by her estranged father, in the Robertson neighbourhood around 9:28 a.m. on Wednesday.

Fifteen minutes later, officers were able to apprehend the suspect, and upon looking in the vehicle that had been used, officers found the girl suffering from stab wounds.

“It’s unbelievably horrific. Our officers attended, located the child inside the vehicle and attempted CPR, to try and resuscitate this child. I’m sure you can imagine how incredibly tough that is,” said Jay Murray, public information officer with the WPS.

“I talked to investigators this morning. There was a number of investigators that were still at work, they had worked through the night. But I was told that a number of them went home, and the first thing they did is they woke up their children and immediately hugged them very tightly. And that was something that was important, I think just to communicate how this impacts the officers that are assigned this investigation,” he added.

The child was taken to hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
