Manitobans to receive new pandemic sick leave pay

WINNIPEG (CityNews) – A new pandemic sick leave program is being implemented by the Manitoba government.

The program will provide financial assistance to Manitobans to help fill the gaps in federal assistance programs and the already existing provincial standards for paid sick leave.

“We are at a critical point in our fight against COVID-19 and the variants of concern, and it is crucial to stay home when sick to help limit the spread of this deadly virus,” said Premier Brian Pallister. “Many Manitobans are living paycheque to paycheque, and they need to feel confident that if they are sick, they can stay home without any financial repercussions or fear of lost wages.”

With the new program, employers will be provided with up to $600 per employee for up to five full days of COVID related sick leave.

Eligible days include days for testing, vaccinations, side effects, self-isolation due to COVID-19 symptoms, or taking care of a loved one dealing with any of the previously listed circumstances.

The Manitoba government also said the private-sector, non-profit and charitable employers with eligible employees are able to qualify to receive the assistance. While employers who currently provide paid sick leave to their employees would not be eligible including federal, provincial and local governments.

Eligibility will begin May 7, and will stay in place until at least Sept. 25, matching federal and other provincial programs.

Only employees who live in Manitoba and work and receive wages in the province will be eligible for the benefit.
