Eastern Ontario doctor charged with murder after suspicious deaths at hospital

A doctor is facing a first degree murder charge in connection with an investigation into multiple suspicious deaths at an eastern Ontario hospital.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say they were called to the Hawkesbury and District General Hospital on the evening of March 25, 2021 and arrested one person.

Police did not say how many cases they are looking into or any information about the alleged victim that led to the charge.

Dr. Brian Nadler, 35, appeared in court on Friday. He was remanded into custody until his next scheduled court appearance on April 6.

Lawyer Alan Brass say his client “maintains his innocence and the charges against him will be rigorously defended.”

OPP spokesperson Bill Dickson says the investigation is in its initial stages and it is expected to be going on “for some time.” Members of the OPP Forensic Identification Services Unit are assisting with the case.

Police add there is no risk to public or patient safety and routine activity at the hospital will not be affected by the investigation.

The Hawkesbury and District General Hospital says that all of Nadler’s privileges at the hospital have been revoked.

“We want to reassure our patients, their families and the community at large that the hospital site is safe,” the hospital said in a statement. “We continue to deliver our programs in a professional and safe environment.”

The hospital adds that it is reaching out to the families affected, and is providing its physicians and staff with employee assistance and post-traumatic counselling.
