16 people test positive in COVID-19 outbreak at St. Boniface Hospital

St. Boniface Hospital has declared a second outbreak of COVID-19, after an initial one Friday. They say a total of 16 people have tested positive as two units shut down and the rest of the hospital remains open.

WINNIPEG – The St. Boniface Hospital is dealing with two outbreaks in its E5 and E6 medicine units.

An internal memo obtained by CityNews says 11 patients and five staff members have tested positive for the virus.

The memo from the hospital says an investigation is underway and outbreak protocols have been implements to help limit the spread.

No new patients will be admitted to the E5 or E6 units as a result of the outbreak.

Visitation restrictions will follow the provincial guidelines, but the hospital is encouraging families to have virtual visits instead.

The communications director at the hospital said they wouldn’t be answering questions about the outbreak Wednesday.

The hospital, which remains open, says it is doing all it can to contain the outbreak.
