WINNIPEG – Some 4,000 Winnipeggers will be testing out the city’s new green cart organic waste collection program this month.
The program, which will last two years, has now started in six Winnipeg neighbourhoods, including Daniel McIntyre, Inkster Gardens, Linden Woods, Linden Ridge, Mission Gardens, and St. George.
Each single-family home has a 120-litre green cart to fill with food waste, a small seven-litre pail for day-to-day use in the home, and some samples of compostable liner bags to use in the pail.
“A plan for organics is necessary as part of the Climate Action Plan and to meet waste diversion targets. Input obtained from this pilot project will be extremely valuable and I look forward to seeing the results,” said Mayor Brian Bowman in a release.
“As someone who grew up in a family that regularly composted, I’m pleased to see the City’s residential food waste collection pilot project officially begin.”
Food will be collected on the same day as garbage and recycling pick up.
The program will run until September 2022, at which point the city will gather feedback from those in the pilot and decide where to go from there.
