Man charged in deadly crash in city’s north

WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Police Service has laid several charges in connection to a car crash that killed a woman and injured several others over the weekend.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, WPS officers tried to initiate a traffic stop of a truck driving near Maint Street and Boyd Avenue.

Police say when they tried to pull the truck over, it sped off, hitting a van just second later a couple of blocks up at the intersection of Andrews Street and Boyd Avenue.

Four people in the van–including a child and an infant–and two people from the truck were rushed to the hospital, all in either serious or critical condition.

A woman who was in the van died of her injuries.

Police have charged Armand Chartrand, 43, with dangerous driving charges including dangerous driving causing death, driving while suspended, driving without insurance, causing death by criminal negligence, and causing bodily harm by criminal negligence.

The Independent Investigations Unit (IIU) is investigating the circumstances leading to the crash.
