Do Terry Fox Run ‘your way’ during COVID-19 pandemic

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — The hope is the Terry Fox Run will continue despite COVID-19, just virtually this year.

Tuesday marks the 40th anniversary of the day Fox abruptly ended his Marathon of Hope just outside of Thunder Bay, Ont.

Fox’s older brother Fred said despite the pandemic, the run will go on this year — virtually.

“We’re just asking people to do your Terry Fox Run this year on one day, your way,” said Fred Fox. “Start from your front step and go for a walk with your family or a close, personal bubble.”

The virtual Terry Fox Run is set for Sept. 20.

“People are still being diagnosed with cancer,” Fred Fox added. “Raising money for cancer research is as important as it ever was, so get out there, participate, register, or donate to somebody you know who’s participating.”

Terry Fox lost his right leg to cancer when he was 18. It then spread to his lungs.

He died, with his family beside him, on June 28, 1981 – a month before his 23rd birthday.

Since then, the annual run in his honour has raised more than $800 million worldwide for cancer research.
