IIU cancels investigation into serious injury during an RCMP arrest

WINNIPEG – Manitoba’s police watchdog has cancelled its investigation into an RCMP arrest that ended with one ma with a gunshot wound.

On July 22, RCMP were called to a home in Riding Mountain National Park. Mounties were told there was a man who was potentially armed and barricaded.

As officers were deciding whether to approach the door of the house, the man surrendered.

When he surrendered, officers saw he had a gunshot wound and was taken to a Winnipeg hospital.

The Independent Investigations Unit (IIU) were called to probe the arrest as it does with any police-involved case with an injury caused by a firearm.

The IIU found that the suspect’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted and cancelled the rest of the investigation.
