Vancouver International, three other Canadian airports begin temperature checks

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Mandatory temperature checks for all passengers at four major Canadian airports, including Vancouver International, start Thursday in an attempt to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Besides Vancouver, temperature screening stations are also set up at airports in Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal, according to the federal government.

Transport Canada said passengers will have their temperature taken by either a scanning camera or by a contactless, hand-held thermometre.

Passengers with a temperature below 38 C will be able to continue to the next checkpoint. Those who have temperatures above 38 C will not be allowed to travel and will be asked to re-book after two weeks.

Temperature screening is expected to expand to 11 more of the country’s airports by September.

Transport Canada said employees who enter restricted areas of the airport will also be screened.

Temperature checks at airports are part of a phased-in safety plan introduced last month. Screening people flying to Canada was the first step, followed by screening for those leaving the country.

The third phase is for passengers travelling within Canada.

In April, Canada’s minister of transport decided anyone without a non-medical mask or face covering during the boarding process will not be allowed on flights.

Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, previously said taking the temperature of people as a screening measure for COVID-19 is ineffective.
