Two men hospitalized after unprovoked hammer attacks, suspect arrested

WINNIPEG (CITYNEWS) – Two Winnipeg men are in hospital after being attacked by a suspect wielding a hammer on Saturday afternoon.

Winnipeg police say the first victim, a man in his 50s, was attacked near Millennium Library park around 3 p.m. on Saturday. He was suffering from severe head injuries and was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

The second victim, a man in his 60s, also sustained severe head injuries. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Both victims remain in hospital. They are now in stable condition.

Police believe both victims were attacked by the same suspect in what they are calling “unprovoked assaults.” They say neither victim knew the attacker.

Winnipeg police arrested a suspect approximately two hours later, around 5:10 p.m.

Eric Michael Robert Oksasikewiyin, 28, was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a weapon and mischief under $5,000. He was detained in custody.
