Winnipeg Transit provides reusable masks for bus drivers

WINNIPEG (CITYNEWS) – Winnipeg Transit is introducing new measures to keep its employees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The transit authority says it will begin providing all bus drivers and inspectors with washable, reusable masks to wear while working. The masks are also being made available to Winnipeg Transit Plus contractors for a small fee.

The decision comes after Canadian health officials have promoted the wearing of non-medical masks to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Transit operators and inspectors who work in public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain, will be provided masks from a Winnipeg-based apparel manufacturer for additional measure,” said Winnipeg Transit in a release.

In addition to the masks, Winnipeg Transit continues to urge riders to respect social distancing guidelines such as riding during non-peak hours, exiting via the back door and limiting themselves to essential trips only.

“While non-medical masks can help keep your face covered and prevent the spread of respiratory droplets, frequent hand washing and social and physical distance are still the best preventative measures.”
