A polar bear, a gun and a courtroom in Nunavut

By ROGERS MEDIA

In Canada, the polar bear is loved and feared and is a symbol of many things. They are a wonder of nature. A symbol of a changing climate. An animal to be respected and feared. But they are also, to the Inuit, food and clothing. And a revenue stream. To scientists and nature lovers, the bears are a species at risk, and their declining population can serve as a warning bell.

Our story today starts with a polar bear and ends in a courtroom in Canada’s North. And in between it touches on almost everything that’s integral to this country’s identity.
