Friends rally public support for co-workers undergoing transplant surgery

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A Calgary woman is giving her coworker the ultimate gift. On Monday, Connie Fluke and Heather McCormick will travel to Edmonton and undergo liver transplant surgery. In late 2018, McCormick was diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells in her bile duct, meaning she would eventually need a liver transplant to survive.

She managed to get on the Alberta transplant list but was deemed low priority, as the list prioritizes those whose health is declining.

Rather than wait for cancer to develop, lowering her chances of survival, the mother of two young children decided to sidestep the list and appeal directly to the public for a living donor.

Little did she know that her colleague Connie, whom she barely knew, would volunteer to be tested to see if she was a match.

She is. Now several months later, Connie and Heather are preparing for their surgery and the months-long recovery that will follow. Both women will need to temporarily relocate to Edmonton during their recovery and the costs are expected to be in the thousands.

Their co-worker Michelle Hogaboaum has created two gofundme campaigns for the women in the hopes of offsetting financial costs.

Links to both campaigns are below.
