City watching properties as potential flooding still unpredictable

Winnipeg (CityNews) – The City of Winnipeg is watching 123 properties that may be at risk of river flooding.

Earlier this week, the province said the mitigating factor remains the forecast in the coming days and weeks.

With favourable weather, slightly less than 2009 flood levels could be expected on the Red River.

With unfavourable conditions, the province said water levels at the James Avenue gauge could reach 20.5 feet.

The city handed out notices to the affected property owners and said dykes could be required.

If a property owner is concerned with the potential of flooding, they are asked to call 311.

The City continues to monitor water levels every ten minutes on its website.

If overland flooding does occur, sandbags will be available at the following locations, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.:

• 1220 Pacific Ave.
• 1539 Waverley St.
• 960 Thomas Ave.

With the spring thaw, there is a potential of basement flooding as well.

The City provided tips to protect homeowners from potential damage to their properties:

1. To ensure maximum protection against basement flooding, arrange for a licensed plumber to install a sewer line backup valve and a sump pit with pump in the basement.
2. Inspect backup valves and sump pump drainage systems to make sure they are functioning properly.
3. Ensure drainage is directed away from the home by extending downspouts away from the basement walls and ensuring the earth is built up around the house.

Crews have been busy preparing for the change in the weather.

They will continue to monitor river levels, seal manholes, fill sandbags and close river gates.
At this time, there is no call for help from volunteers to help with sandbags.
