Federal ministers meet to discuss possible standards for semi-truck driver training

MONTREAL (NEWS 1130) – We could soon find out what new standards for semi-truck driver training across the country could look like.

Canada’s transport minister has said he’s optimistic provinces and territories will agree on a new national standard when provincial ministers meet today in Montreal.

Marc Garneau is in favour of minimum entry-level training standards for truck drivers, and believes every province should have that requirement.

Currently, Ontario is the only province with mandatory truck driver training. Saskatchewan and Alberta are to require mandatory training starting in March.

The changes in Saskatchewan came after last year’s Humboldt Broncos bus crash tragedy.

Sixteen people were killed when the team’s bus and a semi-unit loaded with peat moss collided in April of 2018.

The driver of the semi-truck recently pleaded guilty to all charges against him, telling his lawyer he did not “want to make things any worse.”
