Winnipeg firefighters battle two early morning fires

Winnipeg (CityNews) – At least four people were transported to hospital after an early morning fire on Maryland Street.

It was the first of two fires that firefighters extinguished on Monday.

Just before 6:30 a.m., Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to the three-storey walk-up apartment complex in the 400 block of Maryland Street.

One person was found inside and initially sent to hospital in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to stable.

Transit buses were used to provide shelter for more than 40 people who needed to be evacuated from the building. Three people were assessed and then sent to hospital in unstable condition, according to WFPS.

The cause of that fire is under investigation.

No one else was hurt and the cause is under investigation.
