Health Canada issues advisory for possible faulty EpiPen products

By News Staff

Health Canada has issued an advisory for some faulty EpiPen auto-injectors.

Pfizer Canada advised Health Canada that some EpiPen and EpiPen Jr. auto-injector devices may not easily slide out of their carrier tube, if at all.

The issue is with labels being improperly applied to a very small number of the devices which can cause the auto-injectors to become stuck within their tube.

The agency warns that a delay in delivering the drug to a patient could lead to disability or even death.

The products affected are EpiPen (0.3 mg) (DIN 00509558) and EpiPen Jr (0.15 mg) (DIN 00578657), both products have an expiry date between April 2018 and October 2019.

Both Pfizer and Health Canada say a recall is not warranted at this time because the risk can be mitigated by have a pharmacist check the devices before an emergency situation arises.

According to Pfizer, there hae been no reports of malfunctions related to the issue in Canada.
