Two escaped inmates found, sent back to Stony Mountain

Two inmates that escaped from Stony Mountain Institution on the weekend have been found by police.

The Correctional Service of Canada said it contacted the RCMP after inmates William Benjamin Hunter-Garrioch and Dale Jacob Gilchrist were not accounted for after the 9:30 p.m. count Saturday.

Winnipeg police received a tip the two men were in the city’s Osborne area, RCMP said early Tuesday morning.

Officers searched he area and were able to find both inmates. Police said they were arrested without incident.

Hunter-Garrioch and Gilchrist are charged with being unlawfully at large and have been returned to Stony Mountain Institution.

Hunter-Garrioch was serving a nine-year sentence for, among other things, attempted murder and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Gilchrist was serving a six-year sentence for armed robbery and possession of property obtained by crime.

Correctional Service Canada adds an investigation is also underway to determine the circumstances of their escape.
