Man dead after pickup leaves road and catches fire south of Winnipeg

Manitoba RCMP says a 58-year-old man is dead after a vehicle was found on fire along Provincial Road 201 on Sunday.

Mounties say around 11 a.m. on Aug. 25, officers were patrolling the provincial road heading toward Highway 59 when they noticed black smoke coming from a tree line near a property.

Officers then attended the scene and found a pickup truck fully engulfed in flames and contacted the local fire department.

Firefighters then battled the blaze, and once it was extinguished found a 58-year-old man from Steinbach dead inside.

Investigators believe the truck was driving west on PR201, before it left the road and entered the ditch and a cornfield before coming to a stop at a tree line.

It is then believed that the truck caught fire due to heat and corn stalks caught under the truck.

An investigation is ongoing.
