Firefighters are battling a “significant fire” at a warehouse on Jarvis Avenue.
The blaze broke out just before 1 a.m. Monday at the two-storey building in the Dufferin Avenue and Main Street area.
Officials said when emergency crews got to the scene they found a “well-involved” fire.
After 40 minutes of trying to fight the growing blaze, crews were ordered to evacuate.
Residents in the area have been evacuated and city officials are asking people to avoid the area.
Winnipeg Transit has provided a bus to shelter the evacuees. Manitoba Hydro has shut off power to the area.
Officials said most of the building has collapsed and smoke from the fire is wafting east across the city. Residents are being asked to close all the windows in their homes.
It’s expected that crews will be at the scene all day today and into tomorrow.
Officials said one firefighter suffered a slip and fall injury but will remain on-duty.
There has been no word on what started the fire or how long it will take for crews to extinguish.
